A Marshfield teenager has been shortlisted for a Digital Hero award.

Ronan Finnegan, 19, is in the running to win £10,000 after he designed a pioneering iPhone app that encourages fundraising.

He is one of three to have been picked from hundreds of entries from across the UK and is asking people to vote online for him to be named the person most likely to inspire digital donation.

WakeOrDonate, in the final stages of its launch onto the App Store, is an alarm clock application that donates the user’s money to charity each time they press the snooze button.

Mr Finnegan founded his company orDonate in October last year and is taking a second gap year before university to pursue the success of his apps.

He said: “With WakeOrDonate I have tried to create a charitable app that incorporates donating into our daily lives. If users decide to snooze their alarm, they automatically make a donation to their choice of charity.

“If I am to win the prize money from the TalkTalk awards I hope to get my next app GymOrDonate developed and help potentially millions of fitness fanatics give to charity.”

Baroness Martha Lane Fox, who sits on the judging panel, said: “Digital skills are a hugely important part of modern life, and it’s crucial that everyone in the UK has the opportunity to take advantage of their benefits.

"This year’s finalists have done great work, and I urge everyone to get involved and vote.”

People can vote at talktalkdigitalheroes.co.uk until Thursday.
