A VILLAGE primary school is stimulating children’s imaginations with scrap.
Christian Malford School has used a £9,045 National Lottery grant to buy a PlayPod – a small shed which is filled six times a year with discarded items for children to play with, that would otherwise have gone to landfill.
The contents, including tyres, cardboard tubes, clothes and wigs, come from the Wiltshire Scrapstore, an Aladdin’s cave of waste materials donated by industry, in Bowden Hill near Lacock.
The PlayPod aims to teach pupils about sharing, taking turns and co- operation.
Headteacher Mandy Cook said: “We are very excited to be able to provide these excellent play opportunities for our children through the PlayPod. The children love it.
“We have already noticed the quality of the children’s play has developed dramatically with children of all ages collaborating with each other.
“I am sure this will help to develop the children’s creativity and imagination which will feed into their academic achievement.”
The school’s dinner ladies and some teaching assistants have been trained in how to ensure the children get the most out of the PlayPod.
