I am hopeful there will be a positive statement shortly on dealing with the A303.

There are sound economic and safety grounds for a dual carriageway throughout, but the main impediment has been the stretch past Stonehenge.

Most of us who use the road regularly will be particularly familiar with the logjam westbound from Amesbury. Surrounding minor roads suffer the consequences of motorists trying to find alternative routes.

My MP colleague Bob Neill’s EU Referendum Bill has been killed off by the Lib Dems. If you recall, at the beginning of the parliament my party indulged the Lib Dem obsession with recasting to their electoral advantage the way we vote for our MPs. Our coalition partners duly got their referendum. I could have told them it would get the big thumbs-down from the public, which it did. However, on a matter of real interest to voters, Britain’s place in the EU, Nick Clegg has refused the public its say.

I have had quite a lot of constituency correspondence, much of it, it has to be said, generated by the lobby group 38 Degrees, concerning the MP Recall Bill. This will allow for MPs who transgress to be recalled to face a by-election in between general elections and was in the Conservative Party manifesto in 2010.

My colleague Zac Goldsmith MP proposed an amendment that would make it possible for constituents to recall MPs without the involvement of the parliamentary standards committee. On a free vote, I supported the amendment as I like the idea of the public being involved directly but it was defeated. Still, the Bill as it stands will mostly achieve the intention we all want which is to facilitate the speedy removal of any bad-apple MPs.

If you think I can help or if you would like to discuss an issue, please call and we can arrange a meeting. Alternatively, I’m very happy to chat on the phone or to visit elderly or disabled residents at home. My number is 01225 358584.
