HEALTH and safety regulations have meant that the fundraising big breakfast planned by parents of Bromham PTA has had to be cancelled.

The St Nicholas Primary School parents' association was looking forward to earning up to £500 from their efforts at the St George's Day Big Breakfast on Saturday.

But chairman Peter Wallis was forced to call a halt to proceedings after he was advised that handling protein-based food without a food handling qualification was breaking all the regulations.

He said: "I was shocked to read that health and safety regulations stipulate that any school-sponsored event has to be covered by these regulations and we have to be able to provide evidence that whoever is handling the food has been trained in doing so.

"This has had a knock-on effect on everything the PTA does. Providing teas at Bromham Carnival brings us a lot of revenue. Cream and ham sandwiches are both protein, so we will have to rethink the whole thing.

"This is going to cost us between £1,500 and £2,000 in revenue.

"We are looking into the possibilities of sending some of our members on training courses, but with the turnover of members each year, that could get expensive.

"It is extraordinary. These big breakfasts have been going on for ten to 15 years and I don't think we've poisoned anyone yet."
