Fire caused by saucepan left on the hob
A 70-year-old woman was taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation following a small fire in her flat.
The woman, who has not been named, was alerted to the fire by her smoke alarm in her sheltered flat at Offers Court in Southbroom Road, Devizes, on the evening of May 13.
One crew from Devizes Fire Station attended and found that a saucepan on the hob had boiled dry, creating a lot of smoke.
Fire fighters gave the woman oxygen before an ambulance arrived. She was taken to hospital but was released the same evening.
Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said more than half of all house fires in the county start in the kitchen, usually due to cooking left unattended.
In the 12 months up to October 2007 the fire service attended 428 house fires of which 225 involved cooking.
Fifty eight of these incidents involved elderly people, with the majority (27) leaving cooking on the hob.
