OVER 40 people took part in the Devizes PHAB Club's 25th sponsored wheelchair push last Saturday.

In one of her first duties as mayor of Devizes, Coun Jane Burton sent off competitors on their two laps of the town, leaving from the Nursteed Centre at 3pm on Saturday.

Ros Probert, chairman of PHAB South West, was also in attendance at the local group's main fundraising event of the year.

Before the participants set off, Coun Burton and her husband Richard chose the winners of the fancy dress and fancy hat competitions.

Pat Putland came first in the fancy dress as an Olympic Games supporter, with Diana Cowdrey second as a Lady of the Night and Jim Goddard was third as Wyatt Earp.

Diana Varney won the fancy hat competition with Quakers Over You. Sue Gurd was second with Old Snooks Farm and Pamela Norgrove third with Spot On.

The event raised £1,700 for Devizes PHAB funds as well as £250 for other charities in the 50/50 section, which give other good causes the chance to raise money for their funds.

Sponsorship is still being accepted and anyone wishing to contribute should ring Michael Braund on (01380) 870274.
