ALLING GARDENERS: Mayor Julian Beinhorn and In Bloom judges launch the appeal in front of a display at Hillworth Park
ALLING GARDENERS: Mayor Julian Beinhorn and In Bloom judges launch the appeal in front of a display at Hillworth Park

RESIDENTS and businesses are urged to spruce up their gardens and enter this year's Devizes in Bloom competition.

Devizes Town Council organises the annual event and it hopes by getting maximum participation from people in Devizes and Roundway that it will improve the town's position in the regional In Bloom competition.

Kevin Murray, direct services manager at the town council, said: "Devizes in Bloom strengthens the sense of community and the environment that we live in every day, encourages neighbours to get involved and makes the town a better place to live."

There are eight residential categories and eight commercial categories.

To take account of the new housing being built in Devizes and Roundway there is a new category for best garden display in a residential development, built in the last two years.

People can nominate their gardens or friends' gardens for the competition.

Running alongside the In Bloom competition is a photographic competition and young people's painting competition.

The theme of the photographic competition is In The Garden and is open to all age groups.

The theme of the painting competition is Flowers That Grow Where I Live.

Entry forms for all the competitions are available from the town council offices in St John's Street.

Judging for Devizes in Bloom takes place in the first two weeks in July with the regional judging soon afterwards.

Last year in South West in Bloom Devizes won a silver gilt award after moving into a higher category and competed against towns with bigger budgets.

Mr Murray said: "We hope to win gold in the regional in Bloom competition this year. The theme is a local route with a heritage aspect.

"We hope to include things like the Kennet and Avon Canal and its importance to the town historically and today, and there is the Hillworth Park project where we have done a lot of consultation and historical research as part of a lottery bid."
