Town may take on market and Wharf

The town council is looking at running the Thursday market that's so important to Devizes

DEVIZES Town Council could take on the running of markets in the town and other services when Kennet District Council is abolished next year.

With the creation of one council for Wiltshire next April some services could be transferred to town and parish councils.

Devizes Town Council has indicated an interest in taking on the operation of the Thursday market and the indoor markets in The Shambles.

Other services that town councillors are considering to be transferred are: n Parking services, including the pay and display car parks n Street cleaning n Grass cutting n Tourist information n The Wharf, including the theatre n Bus shelters and benches n Administering arts funding.

Other services that could be delegated include responsibility for public toilets, litter collection, recycling and maintenance of open spaces and footpaths but so far the town council has not expressed an interest in these services.

At a meeting on Tuesday night the town council's community and civic resources committee deferred making a decision on which services it would like to suggest taking on until it had received clarification from Wiltshire County Council on funding and staffing issues. The matter will be discussed again at a meeting of Devizes Town Council on June 26.

Following the meeting town clerk Sarah Todhunter said: "Town councillors were interested in taking on the markets and The Wharf including the theatre because those are things that make Devizes special. They are incredibly important to Devizes.

"We would need to explore whether the town council could do a better job in delivering services than a more remote organisation."

Mrs Todhunter said it was not clear if funding and staff would transfer to the town council if services were delegated. She said street cleaning and grass cutting are services that the town council does not have the infrastructure to manage.

Dont think the Parking services would be passed over to the Town Council, will cost a lot to pass it over and you can bet your bottom dollar the Unitary Council have already made account for the monies from the parking that they will get when they take it over.
Bet all the other Towns Councils would love the parking income too!!
