Eisteddfod success

Even after 60 years Devizes Eisteddfod, one of the oldest youth music and arts festivals in the country, just keeps getting bigger and better.

There was a 15 per cent increase in entries for this year's event, which took place in the town centre on Saturday, mainly for the new classes in drama, mime and newsreading.

Throughout the day young people from pre-school age up to sixth form dodged from one adjudication to another in church halls and the town hall and adjudicators said that the overall standard was up again this year.

The winners of each class were invited to take part in the winners' concert in the Assembly Room at the town hall that evening and there was standing room only as the young people showed their skill.

The winner of the William Dauntesey Cup for the best junior performance went to George Sanderson who, as winner of the vocal solo 12 and under, sang The Frog and, as winner of the verse speaking ten and under, recited The Day Our Dog Died.

The winner of the Giles Chivers Cup for best senior performance went to James Cullen whose violin performance of Bartok's Roumanian Dances impressed adjudicators Bernard Newman and Lesley Cook.
