Road danger fears
ROAD DAMAGE: Charles Fuller points out damage by lorries in Jaggards Lane
ROAD DAMAGE: Charles Fuller points out damage by lorries in Jaggards Lane

RETIRED town councillor Charles Fuller fears the narrow village road where he lives will become a short cut for hundreds of extra cars every day when three new developments get under way.

Mr Fuller, 62, a former market gardener of Jaggards Lane, Neston, is already worried about the amount of traffic that uses the road, which is just 9ft wide in places, as a route to Corsham.

But he believes plans to extend Basil Hill Barracks, the creation of a data centre at Box Hill and the development of a retirement village on the old HMS Royal Arthur site will make the traffic chaos much worse.

He said: "It just worries me to think the damage the traffic is doing not only to property and roads, but also the accidents it could cause.

"The heavy vehicles passing through the village ignore the 7.5 tonne weight limit imposed on the roads and are causing major traffic problems."

Mr Fuller wants the county council to put up signs saying access only, to limit traffic using Neston as a shortcut to get to other destinations such as Melksham, Atworth and Gastard.

Conditions put on the £800 million plan to redevelop Basil Hill Barracks include a roundabout and traffic lights at junctions with the A4.

But Mr Fuller fears plans for The Royal Arthur site which include a care retirement community comprising a 75 bed care home, 221 care apartments, a GP surgery, outdoor recreation facilities and 283 car parking spaces will create a large increase in traffic.

This is the closest development to Neston and is a significant population increase for the village, which is currently around 800 people.

Ian Postlethwaite, major development liaison officer for the environmental services department at Wiltshire County Council said: "We are asking each of the sites for money to put into a pot for when traffic issues arise. One of the developments has already given us £50,000 to put in the pot for traffic improvements."

It would help if traffic could be alleviated on the A4, for example by re-opening Corsham railway station. Sign the petition at http://petitions.pm.
