New media park given go-ahead

OUTLINE planning permission for a new 50,000 metre media park in Corsham was given the go ahead at a meeting last night.

The decision was made after Corsham Town Council made a dramatic U-turn and pledged their support after previously asking for it to be refused.

Town council chairman Alan Bosley defended their new decision after the developers, Spring Park Ltd, gave more substantial evidence on the proposed traffic system leading into and around the site.

The plans to build a business technology park on Westwells Road in the town are set to bring 1,500 new jobs to the area.

Developer Daniel Williams said: "This development will provide quality, long-term, specialist jobs for Corsham and North Wiltshire and we have listened to the concerns of local people.

"During our three day public exhibition more than 300 people came along and we listened to them all.

"Local support is very important to us and we have taken a lot of time to look into the environmental and social impact of this development."

The proposed site is directly opposite the MoD Basil Hill barracks on the edge of the town.

So far, the plans have attracted 36 letters of opposition from local people who fear the strain of the additional traffic will affect the town, appearance of the buildings are not appropriate and the land should be left as countryside.

The plans also include a £50,000 contribution towards traffic management, £150,000 contribution towards public transport services and £5,000 towards pedestrian and cycles signs around the area.

A majority verdict was reached by the Development Control committee with no added conditions or amendments to the plan.
