Bank warns of 'phishing'

A Corsham bank is warning people to beware of Internet fraud after several customers complained of receiving dodgy e-mails.

Reg Burnard, who lives in Shockerwick, received an e-mail about online banking claiming to be from his bank, NatWest.

The motoring journalist immediately smelt a rat and contacted the Corsham branch of NatWest.

He said: "I am a NatWest customer but I haven't used online banking for about four years and I registered with a different e-mail address than the one this e-mail was sent to. I don't know how they got the other address.

"The e-mail, entitled account notice,' asked me to confirm personal details. But there were lots of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.

"I rang the bank and they said they have had quite a few of these and they gave me an e-mail address to forward it to.

"One reads all sorts of things about data being lost, it's quite worrying. I'm sure that if this e-mail has gone to people who aren't quite so observant, many people will actually fall for it."

A spokesman for NatWest confirmed the Corsham branch had received several reports of these e-mails - which are known in the industry as phishing e-mails.

The spokesman said: "We would never ask customers to provide us with this type of information by e-mail.

"We would urge any customer receiving an e-mail requesting such information not to open it or reply to the sender of the message."

Instead attach it to a new e-mail and send it to phishing@natwest.com.

I have had these from all different banks i never reply to them with details i just type in the banks name find the main site and look for the reporting bit about emails i then email them the item i was sent it takes 5 minutes. The only way to stop them is to get them shut down the only way to shut them down is to report them.
