Vodafone customers left to fume

DISGRUNTLED Vodafone customers in Chippenham were fuming after the company lost its signal in the town for the second time this month.

Customers could not send or receive text messages or use their mobile phones to call other numbers for three days.

One customer said: "My phone lost all its reception and it was impossible to get a signal in the town.

"Not being able to get in touch with people and work colleagues caused quite a few problems.

"Obviously your mobile phone isn't the only way to keep in touch, but when you spend a lot of time out and about you do need to have one that's reliable.

"Hopefully Vodafone will sort it out and not give people a reason to go to another provider."

Problems started on September 12 when the signal failed and it was two days before customers were able to use their phones again.

The signal failed again on September 21 and was restored in the evening.

A spokesperson for Vodafone said: "We apologise to all customers for any inconvenience this disruption caused them and we have now fixed the faulty signal receiver."

I work in Chippenham and I had a blip in my reception for about 2 hours but was able to use my mobile after that!

Incidents like this show how totally dependant we are on electricity and telephones. If, instead of targets like Battersea Bridge, the Provisional IRA had gone for transformer stations and the telephone system, life might have been quite difficult. BT has closed lots of local exchanges in favour of big "nodal centres", but this makes the targetting easier.

Jarge - have you been drinking? I don't think the Vodafone signal has anything to do with BT, do you.

No, you're right (not the drinking, the phones)! I was speaking generally - the mobile phone stations are even easier, since they are unmanned and easy to get at. Wait till the Broughton Gifford Liberation Front get going, then you'll see!

Vodafone are probably one of BT's biggest customers, how do you think all those towers are linked up? All telecoms infrastructure in the UK is inter-linked in some way.

Martin - ... and again, completely irrelevant in this case.
