| Bird, the ageing lurcher who has recently gone missing from her home in Yatesbury near Calne |
Dog owner Sheila Ricketts is becoming increasingly worried about the disappearance of her 14-year-old ill lurcher named Bird.
Mrs Ricketts, 77, let Bird into the garden of her home at School House, Yatesbury, near Calne, last Thursday evening just before the grey-brindle lurcher was due to be fed. But Bird never returned.
The garden at School House has no fencing and so Bird often wandered around but always came home.
Mrs Ricketts said: "Everyone in the village knows Bird and she knows the area well."
Mrs Ricketts has owned the lurcher for 12 years and the dog is a much loved member of the family, along with cats Pinkerton and Daisy.
However, Bird had recently become very disorientated, knocking into furniture and finding walking difficult.
The old dog had also developed a skin condition.
Originally Bird was raised as a hunting dog but would not go into the undergrowth which made her useless as a hunter of rabbits and other small animals.
She was put into a dog home at the age of two, as her hunting instincts meant she was difficult to re-home. Mrs Ricketts saw her sitting miserably in a cage and decided to take her home.
Mrs Ricketts said she had only left Bird to go on holiday once or twice a year and was feeling a huge loss at her absence.
Her son Paul, 53, who looked after Bird whenever his mother was away, has been searching day and night and has rung every pet sanctuary and veterinary clinic in the area without success.
They have registered her missing on a website and have appealed for anyone who sees her to log on to www.doglost.co.uk and leave a suitable message.

She is an old girlie so the chances that she has been stolen are slim anyone can see shes very old.Someone may have seen her wandering and picked her up and since she is no bother at all let her stay rather than send her to a dog warden.Tell the police shes missing incase someone rings them saying they have found a dog.Best of luck i hope she turns up safe and well soon.

And she was still let out on her own????
Responsible dog owner will always walk their dogs on a lead, not let it roam around on its own. How did the owner know where to go and pick up its mess????
It is sad that the dog has gone missing, i do hope she come back soon and maybe the owner will learn from this.
