Lost love letter is rescued by teens
 |
| From left Jamesina Breadmore, Aislynn Pye and Alex Kimble who handed in the purse |
PENSIONER Billy Link was heartbroken when she lost her purse, which contained a love letter written by her husband just before he left to fight in the Second World War.
Mrs Link, 86, of Horsebrook Farm, Calne, had kept the letter in her purse for more than 60 years along with pictures of her late mother.
Students from John Bentley School found the purse in the street and dropped it off at Sainsbury's, which returned it to the pensioner.
Mrs Link said: "My purse had pictures in it dating back to the war years. If I had lost it forever I would have been heartbroken.
"The letter my husband wrote to me in 1944 is very precious to me. I don't really want to say what he wrote, but I can say it is very romantic.
"It was amazing that these children found it and gave it in. I wrote a letter to the school praising the pupils for their honesty.
"This has restored my faith in human nature. Before I thought most people were not honest but now I can see people are quite good-natured."
The group of teenagers who found the purse were rewarded by Mrs Link and praised by headteacher Gordon Trafford.
Fourteen-year-old Aislynn Pye was with friends Jamesina Breadmore and Alex Kimble when they spotted the purse. She said: "We found it in the bus stop near Sainsbury's. We decided to hand it in because it was the right thing to do.
"If it was my purse I would have wanted someone to hand it in. We didn't expect any sort of reward for what we did but it was really nice of Mrs Link to think we did.
"I hope more people follow our example and hand lost items in because it can really benefit people."
PC Marina Boardman, of Calne Police, said: "These young people should be commended for their actions. We do get a lot of items handed in but a lot of the goods stay in the police station as people think when they lose items of value they will be stolen or not handed in."

Im honoured to live in a town where children of thier age are honest enough to hand in such sentimental possesions, i hope all readers see that not all of the students at JBS are as horrible as they are made out to be because of a hand full who think its 'cool' to hang around on the streets. That handfull should take note of these sensible girls.

Lost and Found? I've had a grudge agin the Coppers ever since the wife's mother wandered off and they found 'er. I said, "finders keepers", but they bloody well insisted on bringing her back.
