Firefighters work with Calne youth
Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service is being lauded for a new youth program in Calne.
The extended Salamander project, which was run over ten weeks supported a group of young people from the Calne area who had been referred to the scheme by Wiltshire County Council's youth development service.
Skills taught during the programme included canoeing to British Canoe Union Level One, first aid, basic food handling, leadership & command, and survival training. The group also tackled a community project at Calne Youth Centre, redecorating the main hall, and they have constructed two open Canadian canoes with the help of Calne firefighter Darren Masini.
Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service Group Manager Steve Williams said: "The extended scheme was suggested by Crimebeat, and we have been very pleased with how it has gone."
The course concludes with a celebration evening on 25 February, hosted by current High Sheriff of Wiltshire Peter Pleydell-Bouverie and attended by guests including Chief Fire Officer Andy Goves, the new Chief Constable Brian Moore, and friends and family of the participants.
During the event, the group will give a presentation on what they have learned and demonstrate the use of hydraulic cutting equipment.
Chief Fire Officer Andy Goves added: "This course represents the epitome in promoting partnership working and the opportunities it offers to young people to build on their citizenship skills and community safety."

What a great idea. A course like this offers the children something positive to focus on and new opportunities, as well as helping in the community. Lets hope it can be extended even further. Lots of Calne children say theres nothing for them to do in the area, this scheme could be a great start.
