Phelps Parade development plans approved

Calne's Phelps Parade revamp is one step closer to completion after district councillors gave the go-ahead to plans for its development last night.

Westlea Housing wants to demolish existing shops to make way for new retail units and flats.

North Wiltshire District Council's Development Control Committee met with up to 10 residents and traders at a meeting on last night to consider the plans.

Gary Stevens, who runs G&S Jewellers, voiced his support for the proposed development, dubbing it a 'new era' for the town, but said he was concerned about access to businesses in the Pippin during the development.

A spokesman for North Wiltshire District Council said they planned to create a temporary walkway through the Zion Chapel.

District Councillor Ross Henning, who has recently moved to Calne, said: "I have made no secret of my support for this project. Calne has come a long way in recent years."

Councillor Anne Henshaw criticised Westlea for what she called an insufficient public consulation after forms were printed without a return address.

But a spokesman for Westlea said there was a high level of public consultation with up to 1,000 people viewing the plans for the development in Bank House.

Try going back 30/40 years when you could buy anything in calne....Why do these people fall in love with a town (doing quite well before you came, thanks) move here and want to change it!!

Good on them.Calne used to be quite vibrant ,now the shopping is very poor.
new shopping units would be good.i just hope they are not any more charity shops, hairdressers,c
afe and supermarkets.
hopefully after woolworths move in there will be more high street names to follow making calne vibrant again.

While I fully support the redevelopment of Phelps Parade I am concerned that it is only a modest tinkering with what is currently there.
This is a classic chicken/egg scenario what comes first the shops or the customers. I am now closing my shop after 16 months due to the lack of support. I am grateful for those who have supported me but not enough did.
Calne people should look to support the shops they have, that may encourage others to open more shops.

Calne used to have loads of shops, people didnt need to go anywhere else to buy whatever they wanted, Now we have no choice, people will go where they can get the best deal, if something is cheeper in chippenham only a 10 min drive away or even swindon they will go because they have more choice and can do the rest of there shopping whilst there. Tell me Peter where in Calne can i buy a pair of mens work socks or even ladies underwear, or even something for my computer!!!
