Army servicemen go to great lengths for Health Centre
Buckley barrack soldiers from Hullavington at the Family Health Centre in Calne present parents with Sainsbury vouchers
Buckley barrack soldiers from Hullavington at the Family Health Centre in Calne present parents with Sainsbury vouchers

A GROUP of army servicemen from Hullavington have completed a gruelling sponsored swim to raise money for Calne Family Health Centre.

The team of eight swimmers from Buckley Barracks completed the 21-mile swim in just under four hours by swimming a total of 1344 lengths.

They raised £230 in sponsorship money and supporters at the sergeant's mess donated a further £50.

All the money has been changed into Sainsbury's shopping vouchers and another £20 was donated by Sainsbury's in Calne.

The vouchers will be donated to families who use the health centre in broken cross, which works with children under 11 years of age and their parents or carers.

The centre offers a range of services including drop-in sessions, parenting skills groups and support sessions.

SSgt Phil Sutterby, one of the swimmers, said: "I already volunteer at the Calne Family Centre so the NSPCC is a charity close to my heart.

"I have seen at first hand the good work that is done to support local families so I suggested that we should donate some of the money raised to them."

Another swimmer, Private Williams, said: "We decided to do this sponsored swim as we fancied a challenge and thought the swim would be a good test of everyone's fitness.

" I managed to recruit a team of people and we each swam around 160 lengths."

Kevin Rogers, children's services manager at Calne Family Centre, said: "Our aim is to enhance family life for service users and help to alleviate stresses that may lead to child abuse or neglect.

"This generous donation will help us to support local families who are often stressed and lacking support in bringing up their children."

Well done to you all. The NSPCC in Calne does some wonderful work, often unrecognised, and I would think this donation will help local families enormously.
