Cadets march in Calne

MORE than 300 air cadets from across Wiltshire marched across Calne yesterday to mark the 67th anniversary of the Air Training Corps.

The teenagers, all aged 13 to 20, marched from Calne Leisure Centre to St Mary's Church for a special service at 1pm led by padre John Darling.

Calne flight lieutenant Andy Parfitt said: "It was a brilliant day for us. There was a great turnout as we marched along New Road and the weather was fantastic.

"We were so proud to have been chosen to act as the hosts of this parade. We had been preparing for months and thank the public for coming outside on a Sunday to watch.

"Thankfully everything went to plan and all our hard work paid off."

Crowds watched as the cadets marched along Silver Street to St Mary's Church led by the Swindon squadron's brass band.

After the church service cadets conducted an official salute with wing commander of the Wiltshire and Dorset troops Philip Cubitt.

Wing commander Cubitt said: "Everybody did a great job and there was such a great feeling in the air."

The Calne unit was picked as hosts as a reward for all the hard work they have done over the year.

The Calne unit can trace its origins all the way back to the foundation of the ATC in 1941, and has its HQ in Bryans Close Road.

The parade is the highlight of the cadet year. Other activities include flying, gliding, shooting, adventure training, model making, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, camps and aviation studies.

The cadet forces be it army air cadets or sea cadets are all excellent organisations that bring out the best in young people.
A wise parent will encourage their kid to join these groups.
Well done to all on the parade
