NATIONALIST party the BNP were rejected by Calne voters as Liberal Democrat Glenis Ansell won the last town council seat.

Mrs Ansell said: "I am thrilled to have won and want to do my utmost to fulfil the trust given to me.

"I think being new to politics was not a bad thing. Looking forward I am keen to take any concerns that people have to the council."

Only 25 per cent of voters turned up to the Calne Lickhill by-election on Thursday.

Mrs Ansell, 59, who works for Lloyds Bank, beat four other candidates with a total of 278 votes.

In second place was Conservative candidate Greg Widger with 256 votes.

BNP representative Robert Baggs, 48, a practice manager, came fourth with 86 votes.

But it was Mad Hatter Geoff Brown for the Green Party who came last with 23 just votes.

In the run up to the election Mrs Ansell promised to bring the community of Lickhill together.

In his online blog Mr Baggs wrote: "If all of the support we had received across the ward whilst campaigning had been converted into votes we would have done so much better.

"Where were you all? I am not sure if my disappointment was at the BNP result or with the general lack of interest.

"It seems that 2,400 people in Lickhill Ward have no interest in how their town is managed."

UKIP candidate Ellie Bland, who came in third with 150 votes, said: "I am disappointed because it was my old ward but I knew it would a highly contentious election."

As were the Conservatives, UKIP and the Green Party. Why try to make the point about the BNP when they weren't even last!!

Just what I was thinking chipper! the so called 'imartiality' of the press!LOL.
well, Mr Baggs did get 11% of the vote and for a rural area that IS very good, especially when you take into account:-
a/ the 'slightly silly candidate'(the Mad Hatter)
And the 'deliberate distraction' candidate (UKIP)
No offence meant to anyone, I just wish that those who'cannot be bothered to vote' would wake up!

The BNP have been banging on about being what people need; how they're the only democratic party; how they're the way forward. The talk was essentially "follow us into a brave new world". But the people of Calne who bothered to vote said "get stuffed".

I'm intested, Epona, in your implication that your lot lost out partly due to the 'silly' and 'distraction' candidates. Do you think that the people who voted for them mimght have voted BNP rather than for any of the others?

"Only 25 per cent of voters turned up to the Calne Lickhill by-election on Thursday."

Folk are sick and fed up with politics and politicians. Mrs Ansell was elected by fewer than 15 oo of the population.

I agree with Spooks those who do not vote forfeit their rights to complain about decisions made by their council.
There is an arguement that the electorate only turn out in force if they are unhappy with there leaders. The "poll tax" under Maggie Thatcher being a prime example. On that basis the majority of Lickhill residents must be happy with the way the town is being run!

I think it is more likely to be the case that they are indifferent to what the town council is doing and genrally unaware.

Another nail in the coffin of common sense, putting the posh labour party candidate in, but at least the really silly green party came last as they did in the Trowbridge by elections. As posted earlier, the Lib Green Press always tries to put the BNP down despite the fact that the green eco-fascists came lowest of all in the poll. The Greens are much more dangerous to our way of life than any other political group.

One of the main dangers is greens hide behind a charity screen pretending to be non-political and gain funding which 'clear cut' political parties would be denied. Like the rest of their dogmas its just a con. Thankfully the electorate is seeing through it.

I'm glad to see the BNP with three times the Green vote!!
