POLICE are carrying out tests on part of a human skull which was found in the churchyard at St Mary the Virgin in Church Street, Calne.

It is thought a fox might have dug up the skull after recent rain softened the ground.

The skull, which could date back to medieval times, has been taken away by police.

Churchwarden Lucette Rees called the town council who then alerted the police.

She said: "Burials stopped at St Mary's in the 19th century so the remains are not from recent times.

"The parishioner who saw the remains was shocked at the time. After the police have finished with the bones we will make sure they are reburied in the churchyard with the utmost respect."

A police spokesman said: "Part of a human skull has been recovered.

"The bones are very old and will soon be dated."

Rescuers retrieved 264 bodies!

The above comments (all, it seems, from outside Calne) are all no doubt highly amusing - and they are also totally idiotic! Yes, one would of course expect to find bones in a graveyard - BUT only by digging for them, NOT ON THE SURFACE!!!

Please try reading stories properly before putting forth your inane comments, fellas! In this case it is suspected that a fox (or in my view it could even have been a local dog or cat, or maybe even a visiting badger) dug up part of a skull dating back to at least the 19th century. So what's so funny about that?

Thanks "me, Calne", but my GP sees to it that I have all the injections I need! And believe it or not, I DO have a sense of humour - it's just that the childish nonsense above is not in the least funny!

I was ion that churchyard once with my mate from Corsham, we were trying to find the oldest inhabitant by reading the gravestones. I found one stone with Samuel, Calne aged 84. My mate said thats nothing , theres one here, 98. - -Your joking I replied, whats his name? - The man from corsham said....... Miles - from London.
