Marlborough Apple Day is set to be better than ever, organisers have said.

The event, on Sunday, will celebrate everything to do with apples and encourage people to plant apple trees in their gardens.

Now in its third year, apple day will run from 11am-4pm at the town hall.

The highlight will be a workshop, led by fruit expert Dr Joan Morgan, who will identify the variety of mystery apples.

Organisers say places are limited. To take part, email towninanorchard@gmail.com The mayor, Coun Edwina Fogg, will be joined at the opening ceremony by “the Wiltshire Maidens”.

These are rare saplings of old Wiltshire varieties of apple that have been specially grafted for Marlborough Community Orchard by Barters Nursery, at Chap-manslade, near Westbury.

The day will feature apple pressing outside the town hall – take along your own apples to be pressed into juice; apple pip planting and face painting for children.

The results of the apple day art contest, together with a hog roast run by Sumbler’s Butchers of London Road, and the opportunity to buy garden goods, honey and cider are also on the agenda. Opticians Haine and Smith are sponsoring a Gloucester Old Spot contest involving a film of a sow and her piglets.

Apple day will also provide an opportunity to sponsor fruit trees to be planted in the Diamond Jubilee Plantation on The Common later in the month.
