Heddington Jubilee garden comes to life

Children at Heddington Pre-school have celebrated the opening of their jubilee garden, which they planted themselves.

The garden is split into three patches, two of which have been planted with wild flower seeds, and the third has been planted with sensory plants including lavender, buddleia and herbs.

The children, aged two to four, have already planted bulbs for the spring and coloured in pictures of butterflies and insects, which are hung up on a string to decorate the garden.

Work on the garden started in May after the land was allocated to the pre-school by members of Heddington Parish Council, who were present at the ceremony. Parents and members of the Calne Environmental Network, who helped with the planting, also attended.

Pre-school manager Leanne Weston said the staff and committee decided to create the garden. Staff sat down with the older children and helped them decide what they wanted.

She said: “All the children have been talking about the project. It’s been really good for them, they’ve enjoyed seeing all the butterflies and bugs. “We go out all the time just to see how things are coming along and we go out to tell stories when the weather is nice.”
