Former Lavington School pupil Douglas Millar has reached Africa on his 3,000-mile round-trip challenge in aid of two local charities.
Mr Millar, 31, now living in Devon, reached Tangier on Friday after cycling from Devon to Poole in Dorset, then getting the ferry to St Malo in France and cycling through Spain to Gibraltar and taking the ferry to North Africa.
He is raising money for Alzheimer’s Support in Wiltshire and Sidmouth Living with Cancer, Devon.
His mother, Carole, who works for Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers and is secretary of Devizes Musical Theatre, said: “Douglas grew up in Devizes. For 17 years of his life his grandparents lived with us.
“His grandpa developed the early signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s Support enabled us as a family to continue to have Grandpa at home.
“The volunteers came and took him out for the afternoon, giving Nan and the family respite for a few hours. Douglas wishes to support Sidmouth Living with Cancer, a local group set up in 2001 to give support to families dealing with cancer.”
Now Mr Millar has to return through forecast high winds and rain and anti-austerity protests in France and Spain.
