Devizes event to get more on bikes
10:00am Friday 28th September 2012 in News
A campaign to get more people in the Devizes area to leave their cars at home and take to two wheels is being launched on October 6 with a major community event.
Cycle Devizes has been set up by the Devizes Comm-unity Area Partnership’s transport group as part of their strategy to cut traffic congestion in the town.
They want to encourage people to cycle to work, to school and to the shops to avoid the traffic jams that bring the town to a standstill each morning and evening.
Claire Perry MP, Mayor Kelvin Nash and Coun Laura Mayes, chairman of the Devizes Area Board, will be among the VIPs to launch the event at 10am.
There will be numerous stalls connected with cycling and outdoor activities and among the entertainment on offer will be stunt riders. Young visitors will be able to test their scooter skills and there will be a BMX track.
Kate Freeman, chairman of the transport group, said: “Cycle Devizes is targeting families with young children, teenagers, physically handicapped people, keen cyclists, wobblers and residents with an infrequently used bike.
“A Devizes transport guide showing bus and cycle routes will also be launched.”
A guided town trail to show a new cycle route that is being consulted on will leave at noon while a ride around the Pewsey Vale gets away at 1pm. For more information, visit www.cycledevizes.org.uk

Without my car I couldn't get get to my work place location which is less than 12 miles from Devizes. Without the creation of proper cycle lane like those in Holland and Germany I wouldn't fancy taking my chances on the roads around Devizes.
