The town clerk of Marlborough, who was appointed only in January, died in Swindon's Great Western hospital this afternoon after suffering a suspected heart attack earlier today.

Derek Wolfe, 57, commuted to Marlborough every week from his home in Axminster, Devon, where he lived with his wife Lynette, who has recently been fighting cancer with his support.

It’s understood that Mr Wolfe, who was unanimously elected as Marlborough’s town clerk from a group of candidates in January, had driven from his home to his accommodation in Marlborough and that after suffering chest pains he himself called for an ambulance.

Tonight’s meeting of the full town council due to start at 7pm will be adjourned out of respect for the town clerk after councillors hold a moment's silence.

Mr Wolfe had almost 40 years experience in local government serving on a number of councils in England and Wales, most recently at Kingswood in Bristol.
