Marlborough theatre stages talks and plays for autumn season

The autumn line-up at the Theatre on the Hill at St John’s School in Marlborough will be the best yet, organisers say.

Headteacher Dr Patrick Hazlewood said: “It is good to see the building so well used, not only by the range of events in the theatre, but also by the many people taking part in sport, line dancing, ballet classes and adult education.

“It is exciting for us to be able to bring such a wide range of events and shows to the area and to see the popularity of our theatre growing.”

The school said popularity of the 350-seat theatre was continuing to grow “amongst a diverse and acclaimed range of theatre companies and performers” as well as providing a venue for performances and events for local community groups.

The programme starts tomorrow when Marlborough Downs Movies will show The Pirates, followed on Wednesday by the third annual Bishop’s debate, which will hear arguments for and against on the subject, Can Capitalism Be Made Good.

On Saturday, September 22, the Words Worth Yorke Dance Project will feature its diverse work.

Marlborough Literature Festival will use the theatre on Saturday, September 29, for children’s show The Tiger Who Came to Tea, at 11.30am, and again at 2.30pm when Moira Young talks about her books that have won awards.

Also on September 29, at 8pm, there will be music from folk duo Jon Spiers and John Boden. Tickets, £15, from (01672) 512465.

On October 11 and 13, St John’s own International Baccalaureate students will present Terry Pratchett’s Mort, and on October 18, the Stedman Music Cup contest for St John’s musically talented students will take place from 6.30pm.

An ‘open mic’ night on Friday, October 19, will give musicians and singers the chance to appear in front of an audience.
