Hundreds turned out yesterday to see sporting greats Daley Thompson and Sharron Davies visit Chippenham.

The pair were joined by sports commentator John Inverdale as their Battle Bus arrived at Abbeyfield School where they visited the Ninja Tots Martial Arts Club, for youngsters aged two to seven.

Thompson and Davies are touring the country as part of a campaign to capitalise on the enthusiasm generated by the Olympics and encourage as many people as possible to take up sport.

Arriving at Chippenham, Davies said: “The weekend has been manically great fun. We’ve just come from a canoeing club in Bath, where we had 70 people out on the water, some for their first time.

“Now we are here at Nija Tots. The kids clearly love it, they’re having fun, but also learning about discipline and coordination. “It’s about creating habits for life. If you get them when they’re four, five or six it becomes ingrained from an early age and continues into adulthood.”

Thompson said: “We’ve had hundreds of people coming out and it’s been brilliant. It’s all about building on what we’ve achieved at the Olympics.”
