Anthony Cook’s attempt to bounce from Chippenham to Calne on a Space Hopper ended in the back of an ambulance.

Mr Cook, 26, took on the challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK on Saturday.

But it ended halfway along, when he collapsed near the Soho Inn, in Derry Hill. A paramedic was called and he was told to stop.

He said: “I am just disappointed I couldn’t finish the whole challenge.”

Agency worker Mr Cook, of Abberd Way, Calne, had planned to bounce the seven miles from Wilkinsons, in Chippenham, to the King’s Arms pub, in Calne.

After a slippery start at 10am, as he made his way up Chippenham High Street in the lashing rain, he reached a  flat section and everything appeared to be going smoothly.

He said: “Once I got on to the A4, I built up some speed and the support team I had following couldn’t keep up. Everything was going fine until I got to the Lysley Arms.

“I just hit a brick wall mentally as I got to the hill, it was so daunting.

“I knew once I got up the hill it would be mostly downhill from there.

“But it just took it all out of me. I was about 400 yards from the Soho Inn and stopped to take on some water and stretch out a bit.

“When I stood up, my legs just gave out from underneath me and I collapsed. Everything just went blurry.”

An ambulance was called to the scene and paramedics said Mr Cook was suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

They recommended he stopped the challenge, so he took their advice.

Although he could not complete his challenge, Mr Cook said he was delighted to have raised more than £1,000 for the charity.

He said: “I would like to say thank you to the people who supported me on the day. Without them pushing me on I would never have got as far as I did.

“And thanks, also, to all the generous people who donated their money. Lots of them stopped their cars and put some money in the buckets.

“Everyone said beforehand that I must have been mad to
attempt the challenge. I think they were probably right, but I will be planning something else in the near future.”
