Famous names lined up for Devizes lecture series

BIG names from education, sport and politics are among the speakers in the autumn season of Mercers lectures at Dauntsey’s School.

TV historian Dr David Starkey, former England rugby international Alastair Hignell and Tory former cabinet minister Michael Portillo are some of those taking part.

Dr Starkey will begin the season on Monday, September 10, at 7.30pm, with Head of Our Morality – why the modern monarchy matters.

He is followed on Friday, September 21, by Mr Hignell, whose playing career was ended by Multiple Sclerosis and whose talk is entitled When the Goalposts Shift.

Michael Portillo will speak on Life: A Game of Two Halves, when he visits on Friday, October 12.

Sir Win Bischoff, chairman of Lloyds Banking Group, visits on Thursday, October 18; Tony Hayward, ex-chief executive of BP, on Monday, Oct-ober 22; and Sue Sim, Chief Constable of Northumbria Police, on Friday, October 5.
