Calne's John Bentley School has marked its move to academy status with a brand new uniform.

The school has changed from the modern style of sweatshirts back to the traditional blazer.

The uniforms bear a new logo, which was designed by the students.

The changes were unveiled at an evening for parents last week, when the school also officially launched its academy status, which was awarded at the beginning of the academic year.

Headteacher Gordon Trafford said: “We have tied the new uniform in with the launch of the academy.

“We were delighted to become an academy because it was just good and outstanding schools which were invited. In the context of that and the improvement in our exam results, we asked ourselves if the way we represented ourselves reflected our excellence.”

The school held a mini referendum, asking all of the pupils, staff and parents what they thought of the idea and, when they agreed, pressed on with designing a new uniform and logo.

A competition was launched among students to design a new logo and the two winners, Megan Luschover and Mollie Green, worked with Nick Belson, from Calne company Origin Design, to develop the new logo.

Last Wednesday more than 450 people turned up at the launch event, where students put on a 1970s-themed celebration evening.

The new uniform was unveiled to parents. It consists of grey blazers, with blue trim, white shirts and blue and yellow ties.

Mr Trafford said: “The launch event was fantastic.

“I would like to thank everyone who came, those who helped, those who performed and everyone who made the event a celebration of the John Bentley School’s current and future success.

“I am really pleased with the results of the design process for the uniform and the logo.

“We haven’t abandoned the past, as aspects of the old logo have been included in the new one.

“I think this represents a new and exciting phase in the school’s history and I am really looking forward to seeing everyone in the uniform.”
