Music-lover Kath Watson has left behind a fitting legacy for residents at the care home where she lived.

The 87-year-old grandmother of five was a resident at Ferfoot Care Home, in Chippenham, before she died on February 29.

And, after receiving £640 in donations in lieu of flowers at her funeral, Mrs Watson’s family decided to give the money to the residents of the care home, in Old Hardenhuish Lane, so they could buy a collection of musical instruments.

“Mum loved music,” said Mrs Watson’s daughter Anne. “She loved going to musicals when she lived in London.

“She always said that flowers were for living and donations for when you pass on.

“We raised more than £600 from the funeral in March and we thought it would be nice to support something local. She was at Ferfoot for two years and they are very caring.”

Mrs Watson had lived in Chippenham for eight years before moving to Ferfoot when she developed dementia. The care home has purchased a wide range of instruments, including guitars, a keyboard and a ukulele. Music is an essential part of the therapy used at Ferfoot.

Miss Watson said: “With dementia, music is very important because it can help recall things.

“They said they needed to replace the instruments they have as they are getting tatty.

“It is nice we could use the money for this. They are going to get a plaque attached to one of the guitars which will show they were bought in mum’s memory.”

Anne was joined by her sister Jill Brooks on Saturday, as the instruments were handed over to the care home.

Mrs Watson also had another daughter, Elizabeth Taal, and five grandchildren.

Tracey Hannam, from Ferfoot, said: “It is lovely that the family wanted to donate this money in Kath’s honour. We have bought lots of instruments and everyone will get a lot out of them.”
