Wiltshire has been rocking since Wayne Rooney’s close-range header sent England into the quarter- finals of Euro 2012.

The England star’s return to the team after a two-match suspension brought fans flocking into pubs across the county.

And he didn’t disappoint, as his second-half winner gave England the 1-0 win they needed against Ukraine in Donetsk, sending them through to the next round as Group D winners.

The Three Lions will now face Italy in Sunday’s crunch game.

In Chippenham, The Brunel saw scores of fans assemble before kick-off. Manager Sian Rhys-Price said: “Tuesday night was absolutely brilliant. We had loads of fans in here. In the first half everyone seemed pretty nervous and I thought it was obvious we wouldn’t go through.

“But as soon as we got the goal, everyone made loads of noise and relaxed. I was upstairs in my flat when Rooney scored but I heard it, the cheer was so loud.

“As soon as the game finished, loads of people were booking tables for Sunday’s match.”

Up the road at The Bear Hotel, manager Simon Nelson said the victory will be good for business.

He said: “We had a good few people in for the game and there was plenty of shouting going on.

“Anything that encourages people to come out, especially in the middle of the month, is a good thing.”

In Malmesbury, the Borough Arms was a hive of activity.

Barmaid Ellie Pike said: “It was packed in here, as it has been for all the games. There was a brilliant atmosphere, there were people dressed up. Some had their faces painted and were draped in England flags.”

There was also a packed house in for the game at the Bell on the Green, in Devizes.

Landlord Paul McDonald said: “It was a tense game and nerves got the better of everyone, as much in the pub as on the pitch.

“But once the goal was scored, everyone just enjoyed themselves.

“I got a bit of stick about not organising as many screens as for the World Cup.”
