Organisers of Bowood Dog Show and Summer Fair have expressed their delight at the success of Sunday’s event.

The show, which is now in its seventh year and has raised more than £132,000 for charity, was a resounding success, attracting more than 7,000 people and banishing all thoughts of last year’s near-disaster.

The 2011 event was a wash-out, as the dismal weather kept almost all of the usual crowds away, leaving Lady Lansdowne, who organises the show, close to tears.

And it was touch-and-go with a dreary build-up to last weekend’s show.

Lady Lansdowne said: “There were a few low points in the last week but we don’t give in that easily and we refused to cancel because I had the conviction that we would be okay. I am just glad I was right.”

The thousands who turned out were in for a treat, too. As well as the usual dog classes, there were demonstrations from the likes of Blazing Saddles horse stunt team and various dog trainers.

And there was the added bonus of Tractor Ted’s Farm Show, which had a range of demonstrations for children, as well as tractor and trailer rides.

There were also around 100 trade stands, a shopping village and cookery demonstrations.

Mike Weston, who is on the show’s organising committee, said: “We were absolutely delighted; it was a marvellous day.

“The weather basically held out and it was very well supported.

“There were 7,000 people here and at least 600 dogs as well. It was an extremely good day.

“We are not sure how much we have made to give to the charities yet but it will be a significant amount, back up to the level of our early years.”

Lady Lansdowne said: “I would like to say thank you to my incredible team, who have worked through the worst weather this week, and our sponsors.

“And I would like to say a huge thank you to the local people of Wiltshire for turning out in their droves and having a lovely day.”
