The Royal British Legion’s annual county parade came to Chippenham for the first time this week.

The parade, which went through the High Street on Sunday, featured standards from 24 branches of the RBL from throughout Wiltshire.

More than 150 members turned out for the occasion, marking the 90th anniversary of the Chippenham branch.

Julie Shore, the branch treasurer and deputy parade marshall, said: “The parade is hosted by different towns every year and this was the first time it had been to Chippenham.

“We had standards from all around the county, as well as those from the Chippenham branches of the air cadets and sea cadets.”

Members paraded through the town before attending a service at St Andrew’s Church.

This was followed by a trooping of the colour in the Market Place, followed by a reception at the Neeld Hall.

Jim Scott, Chippenham branch president, said: “I thought it was excellent.

“I think everybody played their part to the full and most of the people I have spoken to were quite delighted with the way it all went.

“It is a special year for the Chippenham branch.

“Last year was the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion and this year we have the 90th anniversary of our branch.

“Everybody seems to be in very good spirits, particularly since we were selected for the annual parade.

“We have lost a couple of members in recent years but our membership is increasing and we are managing to attract some younger members. The branch is doing very well and the parade was an excellent celebration.”
