Rumours of 'secret' big name appearances continue

Only a handful of tickets are left for the star studded concert at the Kings Arms pub, All Cannings, this afternoon.

The show is raising money for cancer charities and features musicians including Brian May, Kerry Ellis, Midge Ure, The Sweet, Mike & The Mechanics and Tom Robinson.

Rumours of other big name appearances have been circulating and the concert website today included the statement: “Certain artist’s contractual obligations with other events in the south west means we are not allowed to announce that they WILL be performing at this concert.”

A spokesman for the Wadworth Visitor Centre in New Park Street, Devizes, said: “We have two books of tickets left, with 50 in each book, and must be collected.”

Organisers had originally said that no tickets will be available on the concert site but some will now be available at entrance ‘B’. They have to be paid for by cash or cheque with a banker’s card.

Anyone wanting to pay by credit card must go to the brewery’s visitor centre, which can be contacted on (01380) 732277.

The entertainment starts at 2pm with the Dave Kelly Blues Band and goes on until 10.30pm with more information at www.concertatthekings.co.uk

A fantastic concert, well organised, well attended and some fantastic musicians. Even the weather was wonderful. I hope this event will be repeated next year.

An absolutely brilliant day out! Shame no 'secret' guests turned up but this didn't spoil the day. Very disappointed in Wadworths with the very poor provision of a small beer tent that was by no means adequate for the amount of people there, all having to wait an hour (no exaggeration) every time you wanted a drink and with a venue that didn't allow you to bring any this was not good enough for a business very experienced in outside bars.

Just to reinforce the previous comment, the organization of the event appeared pretty excellent in all areas except the provision of alcoholic drink. Not only were you not allowed to bring in anything other than water, but once inside it was impossible to purchase an alcoholic drink without an hour’s wait. The queue this caused effectively cut the arena area in two. It was an amazing exhibition of incompetence by Wadworths, and a huge PR disaster for them amongst the thousands of attendees. Sadly for us, after having had 2 drinks (2 hours queuing time) we decided we would leave, at around 8pm, a costly afternoon even though it was for a good cause. A big thanks to all the people who organized the event so well, but we wouldn’t consider attending again if Wadsworth were involved in the same way. A fixed location, limited tickets, long planning time, excellent weather forecast, and a captive customer base, how could they get it so wrong!

I agree with the comments that have been made. It was very well organised and the weather was perfect. Only two blots on this idilic event, the Beer Tent was, A. very badly organised and B. set in the middle of the field thus as mentioned cutting the arena in half, the sound from the PA was very low in the area to the side and rear of the beer tent. The Sweet had no real volume beyond the front of the stage. However The SAS Band fared a lot better sound wise.

AS for the lack of surprise artists, despite Jamie from the SAS Band often saying we have some surprises for you later no one who was not on the published artist list was seen on stage. Now I may be cynical but if you want to sell loads of tickets why not boost the promotion for the event by spreading a few rumours about possible appearances by big names, also putting on the web site that " Other artists who cannot be named due to other commitments in the South West WILL ( notice the capital will) appear." I heard names like Paul McCartney and Tom Jones hinted at. Yea Right! Good bit of subterfuge promotion, but it didn't matter those who were there did a fantastic job. The highlights for me were The Sweet, Midge Ure, Dave Kelly, Brian May and Madeline Bell, but I repeat that is just my personal choices.

Doesn't bode well for the Waddies beer festival this saturday - the proverbial "couldn't organise a p*** up in a brewery" comes to mind. Should have let the pub stay open Barney would have done a better job!

To be fair this was a totally different event to the beer festival and this will be something they are much more experienced at.

I for one shan't be attending any events that feaure Wadworths organisational skills. Our tickets cost £85 and the only blot on the day was the predictable c*** up from Wadsworths.
I'll feel fairer about it when they take some action to announce that they won't try the same again next year, and they'll move aside and let someone else do a better job.

Blimey! Waddies made a mistake and some people are saying they'll never go near an event in which they’re involved again! They made a mistake – it happens. And they probably lost money over it. They do other big events such as Cropredy and I’ve not heard any complaints about them.

I’m sure that the Waddies Beer Festival this weekend will be a well-run affair and that those who go will have a great time.

I do worry if some of you come to the Devizes Beer Festival in July and find that your favourite beer has sold out. I could be lynched

Is it safe to assume Don that you weren't there?
Its pretty safe to assume they didn't loose money, they might not have made as much as they could, but a loss, I doubt it.
Would you be prepared to bet £85 that they wouldn't do a repeat performance? Because I wouldn't. We all make mistakes its true, but its how you deal with it that counts.

I'm not at all sure their Beer festival will be well run, but I hope you have a nice time there regardless.

I wasn't at the event, KJR, but I know many who were. They all make the same complaint. And yess, Waddies, probably didn't so much lose as lose out on a bigger profit. My point is that I think this was a one-off. On the whole, they know what they're doing.

Can I ask what makes you say that Don, do you have personal experience of dealing with them?
They've set a very strong example of how badly organised they can be and treated a huge crowd to a rough deal. I've also observed their dealings with several local pubs over the past 5-10 years and I wouldn't say they have left an impressive trail.
More local competition from other brewers and free houses might be a helpfull thing. Then we might really see if they know what they're doing.

I don't like their beer and don't understand why they give it such a horrible taste. Very few Devizes area Wadworths pubs seem to keep their ale well - I'm suprised they are still about given all the great local brewers in the area, Bath Ales, Stonehenge, Pewsey, Downton. Its a pity they dominate the trade in Wiltshire owning so many of the pubs and can afford to keep some loss leaders open due to their size when an independant would fail. Roll on more free houses.

what a load of whingers ..i dont think the above deserve a first class concert (not a beer Fes).It was £42.50 well spent and for a good cause .If it was not for the volunteers and the STARS working for ROCK AGAINST CANCER you would have never seen a gig in a back water (as lovely as it is)like All Cannings..So think before you make negative remarks its was only Beer. There was a water tap
