New title to reflect diversity

DEVIZES Carnival committee has voted to change its name after agreeing to take on responsibility for running other community events.

Members agreed, at last week’s AGM in the Lamb Inn, the official name for the charity will now be Devizes Outdoor Celebratory Arts, or DOCA, although the event itself will retain its name.

Artistic director Dave Buxton said: “From this year the group adopts responsibility for the running of the annual Christmas Festival and Lantern Parade, adding to its programme of carnival, street festival, picnic in the park and confetti battle.

“In June it will collaborate with Salisbury International Arts Festival in a project to light up some of the county’s White Horses at night with hundreds of lanterns.

“The name change is seen as an important step in the progress of an organisation that has earned an enviable reputation for the provision of high-quality events and opportunities for community engagement in the arts.

“The group’s aims will remain the same, to carry on producing one of the best carnivals, a renowned street festival, that this year expands to a two-day event, and providing chances for people to become part of the show.”
