PUPILS at Hilmarton Primary School have been getting to grips with their local environment this week.

The youngsters took part in an eco day at the school, with a number of activities aimed at clearing up the grounds around them.

Teacher Kevin Snow said: “We have been running an eco warriors group in school for more than a year now. Each year we try to do something revolving around ecology and making the planet a better place.

“This year we focused on the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. The children painted some of the benches, which were looking a little tatty.

“And some went around brushing up leaves and dirt, while the key stage one pupils made things out of recycled materials.

“We then had an assembly for parents, so they could pick up some tips on reducing waste in lunchboxes.

“The children really enjoyed the day. We are always looking to have creative approach to the curriculum and this was a good way of getting them to think not only about the big things but also about how they can improve the environment around them.”
