Oliver! is soaraway success

DEVIZES Musical Theatre has sold more tickets so far for its upcoming production of Oliver! than it did for the whole run of last year’s show.

A talented cast of children virtually guaranteed more ticket sales through parents and grandparents, but Lionel Bart’s 1960 musical is still a crowd-pleaser more than 50 years later.

Among the hit songs from the show are Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, Pick a Pocket, As Long As He Needs Me and Who Will Buy?

Anna North plays Nancy, while Sam Phillis is Bill Sykes and John Craig is Mr Bumble the Beadle.

The cast includes two sets of child actors, who alternate performances. Finley Wilson and Joe McMillan play the title role of Oliver Twist, while Harvey Schorah and Gus Haywood share the part of the Artful Dodger.

Director Kim Pierce said: “I am not surprised ticket sales are going well. People hadn’t heard of Crazy for You, the musical we did last year, which was a shame.

“But I think Oliver! will be a great success. It is full of good songs and I am very pleased with the way the cast is progressing in rehearsals.”

Devizes Musical Theatre has joined forces with the Churchill Arms in West Lavington for a two-course pre-theatre dinner for £11 a head. Diners should be seated by 5.30pm and call the pub on (01380) 812287 to book.

The show takes place from Wednesday to Saturday, April 18 to 21, at 7.30pm, with a matinee on the Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are on sale at Devizes Books.
