New Devizes café set to be Scrummy
12:00pm Thursday 12th April 2012 in News
Catering specialist Sarah Cousins is confident she can make a success of the former Polly Tea Rooms premises in the centre of Devizes.
Mrs Cousins, who operates an outside catering firm in Salisbury, has taken on the lease of the unit at Gaiger’s Snuff Street development fronting the Market Place.
Scrummylicious is due to open on April 30.
Mrs Cousins said: “I will be offering home-made traditional English food, which I will cook myself. I don’t agree with the ready-made meals that some national chains serve up. I believe people want freshly cooked food.
“As we get closer to winter we will be offering warming dishes like stew and dumplings, Lancash-ire hotpot, lasagnes and chillis. We want to offer everything to everyone and will have a wide range of options on our menu.”
Cream teas will also be available in the afternoons.
Mrs Cousins is keen to offer tourist information, especially bus timetables, to the public. The Right Time Café, which formerly occupied the site, had an agreement with Devizes Passengers to give space to bus timetables.
She added: “I hope we can work together for the benefit of the community.”
As well as opening to the public during the day, Mrs Cousins will also make the restaurant available for private parties and functions, especially as Wiltshire Council is planning to move the local register office to the Snuff Street development in the autumn.
Although Mrs Cousins and her family live in Salisbury, they are planning to move to the Devizes area in the next 18 months.
The Polly Tea Rooms moved into the premises in July 2009 but it didn’t enjoy the success of its other outlets and closed at New Year 2011. The Right Time Café, operated by the Right Time Trust, Easterton, took on the lease the following August but was forced to close a few months later.
