A fundraising concert for the Devizes mayor’s charities promises to be a fun event.
The Devizes Good Afternoon Choir, founded and conducted by Grenville Jones last year, will be performing, along with guest soloist Naomi Ibbetson and the Fabulous Stockingtops! at the concert called Sing Out at the Corn Exchange on March 9 at 7.30pm.
It will be first time the 100-strong Good Afternoon Choir have performed in the venue and Mr Jones said they were looking forward to it.
“They are a fantastic group. We enjoy ourselves and enjoy singing together,” he said.
The choir formed eight months ago and meets on Friday afternoons in St Andrew’s Church, Long Street.
Devizes Mayor Sue Evans attended a concert they gave at the church and was so impressed she asked Mr Jones if they would perform for her mayoral appeal.
Mrs Evans said: “I know most of the people in the Good Afternoon Choir and they are excited about doing this concert. Grenville is a breath of fresh air. He gives people the confidence to sing and everyone who goes along has a good time.”
Piano and singing teacher Miss Ibbetson, who lives in Devizes, is a classically trained soprano and has appeared in critically acclaim-ed amateur productions.
The Fabulous Stocking-tops! comprise 45 women, aged from 17 to 50ish, who sing and dance. Based in Bath, they were formed by Mr Jones, who describes them as the “zaniest” choir he leads.
Mr Jones, who appeared on the BBC TV programme Last Choir Standing conducting the Bath Male Choir, promised audience participation at the concert.
He said: “Every group will show off its skills. The Good Afternoon Choir is going to sing musical theatre and some choral while Naomi will sing well known musical theatre and the Stockingtops! will sing songs like All That Jazz and Bette Midler music.
“It’s going to be a fun night and if you come along expect to sing at the end.”
Tickets for Sing Out are £8, available from Devizes Books or Devizes Town Hall.
Profits from the event will go to the mayor’s appeal which is raising money for Help for Heroes, Dorothy House Hospice and Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
