Wayne Rooney’s shorts, worn by the Manchester United striker in just one match, are among the items in an auction to raise money for a fund in memory of a young footballer.

Coach Adam Bewley is organising the third quiz night and auction in aid of Charlie’s Charity, at the Bell by the Green, Devizes, on Saturday, March 9, and has been using his many contacts in professional football to obtain mouth-watering lots for the auction.

Mr Bewley, 25, said: “It gets easier every year to get stuff.

“People are just so generous and it is such a good cause.”

Charlie’s Charity was set up by the parents of Charlie Lamb, a promising young footballer from West Grafton, near Marlborough, who died, aged 18, in a car crash near Hungerford in September 2009.

It has raised thousands of pounds to support young sports people throughout the county.

Wayne Rooney’s shorts, signed by the footballer, are just one of the lots in the auction, which also includes the programme from Arsenal’s last match at Highbury and the programme from the fight between Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones.

There is a signed photograph of Paul Gascoigne in tears when England went out of the World Cup in 1990 and a signed photo of troubled former England skipper John Terry.

Mr Bewley said: “The response has been fantastic.

“Twenty-eight of the tables are already booked and there are just seven left. Last year we raised £6,500 for Charlie’s Charity and I am pretty confident about getting at least £6,000 this year.”

Last year the top lot was a shirt signed by 1966 England World Cup hat-trick scorer Sir Geoff Hurst, which went for £530.

To book a table, call the Bell by the Green on (01380) 723746 or Mr Bewley on 07854 800462.
