Work has begun to plant 10,000 trees in new woodland near Devizes to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Willing volunteers pulled their wellies on to dig into the squelchy soil on land between Caen Hill lock flight and Marsh Lane, Rowde, on Sunday, the first of three planting sessions between now and March.
Sarah Brice, project manager from British Waterways, led the band of volunteers and expressed her gratitude to them for turning out for the event.
She said: “Twenty-two years after the Queen opened the restored canal and 60 years since she ascended the throne, we are really pleased to be working with the Woodland Trust, the Forestry Commission, Groundwork and many other members of the community to celebrate the momentous occasion.
“The wood will be a living, breathing legacy that will support our best-loved birds and wildlife.
“All those who want to get involved are welcome to come along to the public planting days and plant a single tree or to stay all day. Just turn up.
“Mud will be plentiful so bring warm clothes, stout footwear and a spade if you have one.”
The next two planting days will be on Sunday, February 12 from 11am-1pm and Sunday, March 17 between 10am and 3pm.
