Wiltshire Council is closing offices in Trowbridge, Devizes and Urchfont in a bid to raise the money it needs for running key services in the county.

The offices set to close in September 2012 are Bradley Road in Trowbridge, Browfort in Devizes and Urchfont Manor, which the council will be able to sell for millions of pounds.

Customers will have to visit the new £24m revamped County Hall in Trowbridge for all inquiries previously dealt with at Bradley Road, while the old buildings will be sold off to form part of the Riverside site for a potential new campus or service provision.

Devizes will see a new customer centre in the town centre at an undisclosed location. Discussions with Devizes Town Council to relocate civil ceremonies to the town hall are also taking place. Browfort could become offices for public sector workers or be redevelopment as an extra care facility for older people.

The future adult education service provision, currently provided in part by Urchfont Manor, will also be reviewed and could be placed under threat. The house will be sold off.

Council bosses say they do not need the buildings because they have reduced staff numbers and many of their employees are now mobile workers.

When the council’s transformation programme is complete it will leave just four hubs at Chippenham, Devizes, Trowbridge and Salisbury.

Cllr Stuart Wheeler, who is responsible for the plans, said: “Our transformation programme is radical and focuses on doing what’s right for council tax payers. We are improving access to our services whilst improving the local economy and saving money.

"This is an exciting opportunity for Devizes. If agreed, these plans will save and reinvest taxpayers’ money, while placing the customer at the heart of services and bring more people to the town.”
