Puplils at Burbage Primary School have helped transform a disused area of their playground into a sensory garden where they have planted herbs and shrubs that will give year-round interest.
Claire Perry MP visited the school to officially open the new garden and she praised the work of the children, school staff and parents who have contributed towards it.
There was particular praise for Simon Last of Last Landscaping who has two children at the school and who sourced all the plants.
School administrator Caroline Renshaw said: “The garden was originally a disused piece of land and now, due to the efforts of children, parents and teachers from our school over the last three years, it has been transformed into a colourful natural paradise.”
Many of the plants are scented herbs and there are plans to install wind chimes to give sounds to the scents.
The school gave the MP a tour so that she could see what the children do both inside and outside of their classrooms.
