Great Bedwyn celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion on Saturday with a fun day for all ages.

The event was held at the club house of the village’s thriving branch of the service charity.

Members of Wiltshire’s own regiment, the 1st Rifles, were present, including some soldiers who talked about their recent work in Afghanistan.

Village organisations, including the youth club, ran various activities.

The Scouts organised “prisoners” in stocks, at whom the public could throw wet sponges.

Marlborough College students showed a film they had made about the history and work of the Royal British Legion.

Other activities included a hog roast, duck racing and music from Maneline, a military rock band from the Adjutant General’s Corps.

Valerie Dalgliesh, who helped organise the event, said: “We had a wonderful afternoon and we had quite a lot of people come along and support us.”

Just as the fun day was closing, the sunshine turned to heavy rain but it was too late to mar the event.

Takings were about £500 which will be shared between the RBL club and branch.
