A frog sculpture commissioned at a cost of £13,000 for Devizes millennium celebrations 12 years ago has still not found a proper home but will go on show at an exhibition in Worton .

The Ball of Frogs that was supposed to be installed by the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of the town has been lying in the garden of sculptor Judy Boyt at Easterton Sands ever since.

Miss Boyt, an internationally-renowned animal artist, who specialises in equestrian subjects, created the piece in 1999 and it was supposed to be placed on the canal bank close to the Town Bridge in Northgate Street.

But British Waterways objected, saying it would interfere with boating traffic. They also vetoed a town council suggestion, close to the top of Caen Hill flight of locks.

Simon Fisher, deputy town clerk, said: “British Waterways didn’t come up with an alternative on the canal so our thinking was we could install it as part of the refurbishment of Hillworth Park.

“But Judy insists it has to be seen emerging from water and that might not be possible. We are still looking.”

Devizes Town Council contributed £6, 500 to the cost of the sculpture and Ms Boyt sold miniatures to raise funds for the project.

The Frogs will go on show at the exhibition at the Old Mill Gallery in Worton from September 8 to 17 along with other examples of Ms Boyt’s work. Among them will be her Kids Will Be Kids cut-out sculptures, which used to stand in the art park in New Park Street.
