This is the devastating sight that caravan site warden Mark Crump was confronted with after his new motor home went up in flames on Monday morning during its first trip out.

The £50,000 RV, which is the main home of Mr and Mrs Crump who run Sells Green caravan park, set alight at Seend Fork on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the junction of A365 and A361 where the luxury motorhome went up in flames just minutes after Mr Crump realised something was wrong.

Mr Crump and his wife were driving along towards Seend Fork from Seend village shortly before 11am when the control panel lit up and they knew something was wrong, within minutes smoke started coming from underneath the bonnet.

He said: “The control panel just lit up and we saw smoke coming from the engine so we grabbed the fire extinguisher before we got out and it went up in flames.”

He added: “We had only driven 14 miles in it today, its the first time we had used it apart from when we picked it up when we bought it three weeks ago.”

They had sold their caravan before buying the RV three weeks ago and were using it as their main home during the holiday season as they are wardens at Sells Green caravan site.

Fire crews from Devizes and Trowbridge attended and got the fire under control before extinguishing it fully shortly afterwards.

Trowbridge watch manager Damien Bence said: “We had a crew from Devizes and a crew from Trowbridge attend with nine firefighters working to extinguish the fire using hose reel jets and wearing breathing apparatus.

“We started from the outside before going inside and checking the damage.

“We are not sure of the exact cause but its looking like it may have been a mechanical or electrical problem.”

Police also attended the scene to put a road closure in place on the A361 but reopened one lane shortly after 11am.

Officers are still redirecting traffic away from the incident as one lane remains closed while a fire investigation is carried out.

Nobody was injured during the incident.
