A solar energy company that specialises in creating 36-acre solar farms is interested in a landfill site in Wootton Bassett.

Land west of Park Grounds Farm, in Brinkworth Road, has been earmarked as a potential location for the farm, which could generate enough energy to power approximately 1,200 homes.

Vogt Solar Ltd has still to work out details, such what the site would look like, before putting forward final plans. It also says that the public would be consulted before an application was made for planning permission.

The company, which has a number of solar farms, is waiting on the Government’s decision of a review of large-scale solar farm in the UK, in respect to the ‘feed-in tariffs’. This relates to the amount the company receives for every unit of energy generated, whether it is used or not.

Sue Sutcliffe, a business developer for Vogt Solar, said: “We want to do a public consultation prior to putting in a planning application.

“We would want to be in a position where we would have got enough information on the site in particular.

“We would be very much looking to do as much of the build using local suppliers and local people as we can because that’s how we do it.”

The company says the Wootton Bassett farm could generate enough energy to save 55,000 tonnes of CO2 over 25 years.

Consultant Richard Murray was expected to represent Vogt Solar at a town council meeting on Thursday but did not turn up.

Coun Owen Gibbs, who is chairman of the planning committee, said: “Mr Murray never turned up so I’m as much in the dark as yourselves. I was hoping to learn something about it.”
