The Cory’s genial conductor, Dr Robert Childs, presided over a well balanced mix of music from opera, to Broadway to Abide With Me, a hymn that always brings a tear to the eye.

It’s a bit of a Childs family affair, with daughter Joanne and son David among the soloists.

No reflection on Joanne’s talent but I felt Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjues played on flugel horn, was best left to its original instrument, the guitar, to create the crispness and simplicity it requires.

On the other hand the transposition of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto to Owen Farr’s tenor horn, worked extremely well.

David Childs’ variations on the Irish traditional melody, Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms, was scintillating.

There was a melifluous trombone version of Georgia on my mind from Christopher Thomas.

The band’s huge rich sound makes the spine tingle, and the ears ring. Pianissimo is a rare element in the repertoire.
